law allowed it.<\/p>\n

She asked whether there was any chance Levi already knew details of the existing estate documents.<\/p>\n

I thought of Cynthia mentioning the brownstone so casually and said, \u201cMore than a chance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marlene nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen we prepare as if they\u2019ve been planning this for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anya stayed all weekend.<\/p>\n

We did not tell Levi she was in town.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, an hour before they were due to arrive, Marlene came back with a small digital recorder and a stack of papers for me to sign.<\/p>\n

Not the kind Levi wanted.<\/p>\n

These papers removed him as executor, clarified that the brownstone could not be sold or transferred without my direct notarized consent, and placed the property into a trust with conditions designed to protect me from coercion.<\/p>\n

Exactly as I had heard in the phone call, only now it came with polished language and fake concern.<\/p>\n

Cynthia pulled out blueprints.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019d stay in the guest suite,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019d take the main bedroom so we could help you with daily things.\u201d<\/p>\n
