His face crumpled the way it had when he was six years old and broke a lamp, except now he was a grown man and the thing he had broken was much larger.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, I was desperate,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had debts.<\/p>\n

We were drowning.<\/p>\n

I thought\u2026<\/p>\n

I thought if we could get into this house, we could fix everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBy waiting for me to die?\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

He had no answer.<\/p>\n

Cynthia tried one last maneuver.<\/p>\n

She said I was overreacting.<\/p>\n

She said no one had harmed me.<\/p>\n

She said families discussed inheritance all the time.<\/p>\n

Marlene cut her off and told her that discussing inheritance was one thing, manipulating an elderly person after securing a massive transfer was another.<\/p>\n

Then Marlene asked Levi a question that seemed to drain the last of the strength from him.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid your mother know that two days before requesting the $600,000, you and your wife had already been denied a refinancing loan because of your credit card debt and unpaid tax balance?\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at him.<\/p>\n

He stared at the floor.<\/p>\n

I had not known.<\/p>\n

So the money was not for an investment.<\/p>\n

It was a rescue operation built on a lie.<\/p>\n

A long, terrible quiet followed.<\/p>\n

In that silence, I saw my son not as I had wanted him to be, but as he was: weak, ashamed, easily led by greed, and willing to place his own mother beneath his problems rather than beside him inside the truth.<\/p>\n

I did not scream.<\/p>\n

I did not collapse.<\/p>\n

I said the only thing that mattered.<\/p>\n

Levi looked up, stunned.<\/p>\n

\u201cTake your wife and leave my house.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nathan lifted his head from Anya\u2019s shoulder, frightened by the sharpness in my voice.<\/p>\n

I softened only for him.<\/p>\n

\u201cNathan can come visit me whenever he wants,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut the two of you will not step into this house again without my permission.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cynthia muttered something about lawyers.<\/p>\n

Marlene said she welcomed that.<\/p>\n

Levi looked broken, but broken was not the same as innocent.<\/p>\n

They left with the pastry box still unopened on the table.<\/p>\n

When the door shut, my knees gave out.<\/p>\n
