Twenty minutes after Grandma Margaret made that phone call, Aunt Patricia tried to leave through the back door.

She didn’t make it.

“Sit down, Patricia,” Grandma ordered. “Nobody is leaving until I know what happened to my granddaughter’s money.”

I stood beside the fireplace, holding Lily against my chest, while my mother refused to meet my eyes.

Then the doorbell rang.

Richard, Grandma’s longtime attorney, entered carrying a leather briefcase. Beside him was Clara, a forensic accountant with a laptop and a face that revealed nothing.

Richard spread six documents across the dining table.

“Mrs. Whitmore, the $180,000 was transferred eleven months ago into an account opened under your granddaughter’s name.”

My stomach dropped.

“That’s impossible. I never opened that account.”

Clara turned her laptop toward me. “According to these records, you did. And you personally authorized every withdrawal.”

Aunt Patricia suddenly shouted, “She probably spent it and doesn’t want to admit it!”

Grandma slammed her palm against the table.

“Enough!”

Richard pointed to a signature on the final document. “We have something more concerning. This account was opened using a notarized power of attorney.”

I leaned forward.

The signature looked exactly like mine.

But the date beside it made my blood run cold.

“That can’t be right,” I whispered. “I was in the hospital that day, giving birth to Lily.”

My mother dropped her glass.

It shattered against the floor.

Clara looked up sharply. “Mrs. Denise Carter, is there something you’d like to tell us?”

My mother began crying.

Then she whispered five words that changed everything.

“Patricia didn’t do this alone.”

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Aunt Patricia lunged toward my mother.

“Denise, shut your mouth!”

Uncle Robert caught Patricia by the arm before she reached her.

Grandma stepped between them. “Tell me everything. Right now.”

My mother’s hands trembled. “Patricia said the money belonged to the family. She promised we’d return it before anyone noticed.”

I felt something inside me break.

“You watched me struggle to buy diapers,” I whispered. “You knew Lily and I were barely surviving.”

Mom covered her face.

Richard interrupted. “There’s another problem. The money wasn’t simply withdrawn. Most of it was transferred to a company called Evergreen Property Holdings.”

Uncle Robert went pale.

“That’s Patricia’s company,” he said.

Patricia screamed, “Robert, don’t you dare!”

Clara opened another document. “The company purchased a rental property six weeks after receiving the funds.”

Grandma turned toward Patricia. “You bought yourself a house while my great-granddaughter needed food?”

But Richard wasn’t finished.

“There’s something else. The power of attorney wasn’t the only document submitted to the bank.”

He placed a second page in front of me.

It was a sworn statement claiming that my late husband, Evan, had authorized Patricia to manage our family’s emergency funds.

I stared at his familiar signature.

Then I saw the date.

“Evan died three months before this was signed.”

The room went completely silent.

Clara nodded grimly. “That’s why we requested the original documents. Someone may have forged your husband’s signature after his death.”

Grandma reached for my hand. “Sweetheart, this is no longer just about missing money.”

Suddenly, my mother’s phone lit up on the table.

The caller’s name was EVAN.

I stopped breathing.

My husband had been dead for more than a year.

And someone was calling from his phone.
