Now we do ours.”

There was no response.

I kept talking.

I told him it was raining hard enough outside that the parking lot was probably shining like black glass.

I told him about the old church bell across the street that marked every hour whether anyone wanted to know the time or not.

I told him about the diner two blocks away that served pancakes so large they covered the plate.

Then I told him about Mrs. Daniels in Room 318.

“She’s beaten heart failure twice,” I said, “but she still thinks hospital coffee tastes like burnt mud, so apparently surviving things has not improved her standards.”

I smiled despite myself.

Marcus remained still beneath the blanket.

The monitor continued its steady work.

Sometimes caring for somebody is dramatic.

Sometimes it means moving quickly enough to keep them alive.

Other times it means standing in a dim room after the emergency is over, adjusting one corner of a blanket and making sure the person in the bed is not treated as invisible.

Patricia had spent three years making sure I knew she considered me replaceable.

Sitting beside Marcus, I realized I no longer needed to argue with her about it.

My value did not become real because Patricia acknowledged it.

It was already there in every patient whose fear had eased because somebody stayed five minutes longer than required.

I continued charting.

Above the medication cabinet, mounted high in the corner of Room 314, a small black security camera blinked red.

I had worked beneath cameras like it for years.

Most of the time, they became part of the architecture—the kind of object your brain stopped noticing because it was always there.

That morning, I barely registered it.

Patricia did.

When she appeared outside the room again, her gaze did not settle on Marcus first.

It went upward.

I followed it.

The small red indicator kept blinking.

Patricia looked at the camera, then at me, and for the first time since she had mocked me at the nurses’ station, I wondered whether she was thinking about something other than winning the next argument.

She had spent the entire night behaving as though authority belonged to the person willing to speak the loudest.

The camera had no opinion about authority.

It simply watched.

I went back to Marcus’s chart and tried to focus on the numbers in front of me.

His condition remained critical.

My final shift was not yet finished.

And whatever Patricia believed she had controlled with her title, her clipboard, and her carefully chosen words, there was now one witness she could not embarrass, intimidate, or convince to look away.

The red light above the medication cabinet continued blinking while the storm moved across the hospital.

I did not yet know how important that quiet little camera would become.

I only knew Patricia had noticed it before I had—and that after everything she had said to me that night, the realization seemed to trouble her far more than my silence ever had.

Patricia Blake waited until there were witnesses before she told me nobody would remember my name.
