The first time Lily said it, her voice was so small I could barely hear it, drowned out by the running water and the clatter of dishes in the sink.<\/p>\n

She was six years old. Usually chatty. Usually stubborn, as children often are. A little girl who loved bubble baths, played with toy boats, and wrapped herself in a towel like a queen after drying her hair.<\/p>\n

So when she stood in the bathroom doorway that Tuesday evening, her arms wrapped around herself and her eyes fixed on the floor, I couldn\u2019t help but smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou still have to take a bath, honey.\u201d<\/p>\n

She didn\u2019t protest.<\/p>\n

She simply started crying.<\/p>\n

Not to complain. Not to pout.<\/p>\n

She was crying so hard she couldn\u2019t take it anymore, as if the water had hurt her.<\/p>\n

I turned off the faucet and knelt before her.<\/p>\n

\u201cHey,\u201d I said softly. \u201cWhat\u2019s wrong?\u201d<\/p>\n

She shook her head violently, her ponytail swishing back and forth.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease\u2026 don\u2019t make me do this.\u201d<\/p>\n

I should have known right then.<\/p>\n

But I didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

My life had become a constant balancing act, and tiredness makes you lose sight of the most important warning signs.<\/p>\n

I had remarried eight months earlier.<\/p>\n

Ryan had been like a godsend when he came into our lives. Patient. Caring. The kind of man who remembered Lily\u2019s favorite cereal and quietly fixed things around the house without me asking.<\/p>\n

After my first husband died in a work accident, I spent three years surviving. Not truly living.<\/p>\n

Ryan was like warmth after a long, cold winter.<\/p>\n

When Lily changed after the wedding\u2014quieter, more clingy, with nightmares\u2014I told myself what you always say when you don\u2019t want to face a deeper problem:<\/p>\n

As soon as I mentioned bathing, her whole body would stiffen. Her face would turn chalk white. Her hands would shake. Sometimes she would cower in a corner, as if I were trying to endanger her.<\/p>\n

One night, I lost my patience.<\/p>\n

\u201cLily, stop. It\u2019s just a bath.\u201d<\/p>\n

As soon as I said those words, she screamed.<\/p>\n

Not like a scolded child. More like a child experiencing something terrible.<\/p>\n

Her knees buckled and she collapsed to the floor. She was shaking so violently I thought something serious had happened. I collapsed next to her and tried to support her, but she resisted and gasped:<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, no, no, please\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLily!\u201d I cried. \u201cTalk to me!\u201d<\/p>\n

She pressed her face into the carpet and sobbed so hard she could barely breathe\u2026<\/p>\n
