That\u2019s how I started it. We were at Olive Garden, the one off Route 9, in the corner booth she always asks for because she says the lighting there is kinder.<\/p>\n

It was our 25th anniversary. I\u2019d already ordered.<\/p>\n

She got the chicken alfredo, same as she gets every single time, and I remember she had a breadstick halfway to her mouth when I said it.<\/p>\n

She put it down slow. Didn\u2019t say anything.<\/p>\n

Just looked at me with this little waiting look, like she thought I was about to say the dishwasher broke again.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not going to pretend I was brave.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d been rehearsing this in the car for three days.<\/p>\n

I had a whole speech and then the second her eyes met mine the speech evaporated and all I had left was the truth, raw, no padding.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn 2011, I had an affair.<\/p>\n

Four months.<\/p>\n

I ended it.\u201d<\/p>\n

I said it almost flat. Like I was reading a receipt.<\/p>\n

I think some part of me believed that if I said it gently enough it wouldn\u2019t land as hard.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s stupid.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no gentle way to say that to your wife over dinner you paid seventy-eight dollars for.<\/p>\n

Her name is Carol. We met in college.<\/p>\n

She used to leave little notes in my work bag for the first ten years we were married and I used to roll my eyes at them and now I\u2019d give anything to find one again.<\/p>\n

She didn\u2019t cry.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the thing nobody tells you.<\/p>\n

You build it up in your head as this tears and screaming moment and instead she just sat there, completely still, and asked me one question.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy now?\u201d<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s the part I\u2019d been dreading more than the confession itself.<\/p>\n

Because the honest answer was that I didn\u2019t come clean out of guilt.<\/p>\n

I came clean because I got caught, in a way.<\/p>\n

The woman from 2011, her name was Dana, she called the house last week.<\/p>\n

I almost didn\u2019t pick up. I wish I hadn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

She told me she has a daughter.<\/p>\n

Twelve years old.<\/p>\n

And then she said something that made my hands go cold around the phone.<\/p>\n

She said the girl looks like me.<\/p>\n

Same birthmark behind the left ear.<\/p>\n

I have that birthmark.<\/p>\n

My father had it.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not a thing you see on strangers.<\/p>\n

Dana needs money.<\/p>\n

Forty-seven thousand dollars, for surgery for the girl.<\/p>\n

I was so busy doing math I didn\u2019t want to do.<\/p>\n

I sat with that for about four days before I decided I couldn\u2019t carry it into our anniversary dinner pretending everything was fine.<\/p>\n
