May we come in?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>The kind that fills your ears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d Gordon said. \u201cThat\u2019s ridiculous. It was just a family thing. Who called you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll explain,\u201d a second voice said.<\/p>\n<p>A woman this time. Steady, but not unkind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan we step inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I heard the door close.<\/p>\n<p>Footsteps.<\/p>\n<p>The living room TV turned off.<\/p>\n<p>Sadie lifted her head and huffed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay,\u201d I whispered, mostly to myself.<\/p>\n<p>I couldn\u2019t hear every word, but some sentences carried down the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdvertisement posted from this number.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe couple who paid you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMicrochip registered to your daughter-in-law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And from Brenda, sharp and high, \u201cThis is none of your business. We found that dog a good home. It\u2019s not a crime to rehome an animal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a crime to sell property that isn\u2019t yours,\u201d the officer said.<\/p>\n<p>His voice didn\u2019t rise.<\/p>\n<p>That made it worse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEspecially when you misrepresent ownership. I\u2019m not here to argue. I\u2019m here to document what happened and explain the legal consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie\u2019s eyes were wide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs Grandpa going to jail?\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cProbably not, but for the first time, someone is telling him he can\u2019t just do whatever he wants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>A few minutes later, footsteps came toward the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>I straightened in my chair.<\/p>\n<p>The officers appeared in the doorway first.<\/p>\n<p>A tall man, a shorter woman with her hair in a bun, both in uniform.<\/p>\n<p>Their eyes flicked over me, over Sophie, over Sadie at my feet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElena?\u201d the woman asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you for coming in last night,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019ve spoken with your in-laws. We\u2019ll file our report, and the prosecutor will determine how to proceed. At a minimum, they\u2019ll be required to repay the buyers and may face fines. If this moves forward, you\u2019ll get a letter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnderstood,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>The man nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re sorry this happened,\u201d he said. \u201cYou did the right thing. Reporting it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They left.<\/p>\n<p>The front door shut.<\/p>\n<p>The house was too quiet for three full seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Then Brenda and Gordon came into the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>Gordon\u2019s face was red.<\/p>\n<p>Brenda\u2019s was white.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow could you do this?\u201d Brenda hissed. \u201cYou called the police on us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI reported a theft,\u201d I said. \u201cThey decided to investigate it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re destroying this family over a dog,\u201d she said. \u201cOver a dog. Elena, do you hear yourself?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hear you,\u201d I said. \u201cI also heard you tell my daughter not to make a scene when you ripped away the last thing she had from my mother. I heard you tell me it was just a dog and that Madison\u2019s feelings mattered more. I heard you lie to strangers for $2,500.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat money was for this house,\u201d Gordon snapped. \u201cFor bills, for repairs. You have no idea what it takes to keep this place going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do,\u201d I said. \u201cI\u2019ve been paying for it with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He opened his mouth, closed it.<\/p>\n<p>The muscle in his jaw jumped.<\/p>\n<p>Brenda jabbed a finger toward Sadie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s here now,\u201d she said. \u201cWhat more do you want? You got your way. Why drag the law into it? You think neighbors aren\u2019t going to talk? You think we aren\u2019t going to hear about this at church?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor once,\u201d I said, \u201cyou get to worry about what other people think. Not me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re ungrateful,\u201d Gordon said. \u201cWe took you in when you had nothing. We gave you a place to live. We helped raise your child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou also taught her that, in this house, she comes second,\u201d I said. \u201cI\u2019m not letting that lesson sink in any deeper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At that moment, Colin came down the stairs carrying a box of books.<\/p>\n<p>He stopped in the doorway, taking in the scene.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, Dad,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>His voice was flat in a way I\u2019d never heard before.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brenda turned to him like she\u2019d been waiting for backup.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell her she\u2019s gone too far,\u201d she said. \u201cTell her you won\u2019t stand for this. You sold her. You told strangers we didn\u2019t want her. You watched Sophie come home and find a note on her door instead of a dog. You knew what that dog meant to us. And you told us to let it go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were going to talk about it,\u201d Brenda protested. \u201cWe were going to work something out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Colin said. \u201cYou were hoping Elena would cry, calm down, and move on like always. And when she didn\u2019t, you got caught.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gordon snorted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo what? You\u2019re moving out in a huff. Where will you go? You can\u2019t afford\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can,\u201d Colin said. \u201cWe\u2019ve run the numbers. We\u2019ll manage. And at least when we pay rent, the landlord won\u2019t sell our dog.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brenda flinched like he\u2019d slapped her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are really going to walk out on us,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not walking out,\u201d I said. \u201cWe\u2019re walking away. There\u2019s a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re your parents,\u201d Gordon said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou had a chance to be my family\u2019s safe place. You chose to be the opposite.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He picked up the box again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll be out by the end of the month,\u201d he said. \u201cWe won\u2019t be paying your bills anymore. We won\u2019t be your backup plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brenda sat down hard in a chair.<\/p>\n<p>They didn\u2019t say anything to that.<\/p>\n<p>They slammed cupboards louder that week.<\/p>\n<p>They muttered about people who don\u2019t appreciate what they have.<\/p>\n<p>But they didn\u2019t apologize.<\/p>\n<p>They didn\u2019t mention Sadie.<\/p>\n<p>They never said the word sorry out loud.<\/p>\n<p>It didn\u2019t matter anymore.<\/p>\n<p>We found a small two-bedroom apartment across town.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing fancy, but the lease had our names on it and no one else\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>On the last night in the old house, Sophie stood in her empty room and looked around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not going to miss it,\u201d she announced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about the tree in the yard?\u201d I asked. \u201cAnd your pink curtains?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can plant a new tree,\u201d she said. \u201cWe can get new curtains.
