Marcus finally turned the tablet toward Nathan, but he did not hand it over right away. The former operations chief looked at him for a long second and said there was something Nathan needed to understand before he went inside for Lily. Whatever had happened during those 3 hours 41 minutes was no longer limited to the driveway.
Nathan stared at the screen.
The wet tarmac stretched behind them, bright under the vehicle lights. One of the SUVs idled nearby. Marcus kept one hand against the tablet and lowered his voice.

“You need to know what Claire was doing with that phone,” he said.
Nathan’s jaw tightened.
“I already know. She was recording Lily.”
“That’s not all she was recording.”
Marcus finally released the tablet.
Nathan looked down.
The first video was the doorbell footage he had watched from the aircraft. Lily barefoot on the driveway. Unicorn pajamas. Tears on her cheeks. Meredith blocking the door. Brooke dumping water near her feet while Vanessa held the dish soap and Erin laughed. Claire standing behind them with her phone raised.
But Marcus had pulled up another file.
It was Claire’s recording.
The angle was different. The camera was closer to the driveway, pointed toward Lily and the front door. The audio was clearer. Nathan could hear Lily asking to be let inside.
Then he heard Claire’s voice.
“You’re making this harder than it needs to be.”
Lily answered through tears.
“I just want Daddy.”
Nathan stopped the video.
For a moment, he looked toward the house beyond the SUV.
He had spent the flight thinking about what he would say when he saw Claire. Now he realized the first thing he needed to do was see his daughter.
“Is Lily inside?”
Marcus nodded.
“Mrs. Alvarez saw them bring her through the door.”
“Who has her now?”
“Meredith says she’s handling it.”
Nathan’s expression hardened.
“She’s not handling my daughter.”
Marcus did not argue. He simply opened the rear door of the SUV.
Nathan climbed in.
The drive to the house took only minutes, but every turn felt too slow. Marcus sat beside him, reviewing the information already gathered. The attorney had confirmed the custody documents were current. The police had been contacted. A child-protection intake had been started. Nothing was being left to a single person’s word.
Nathan listened without interrupting.
Then his phone buzzed.
Mrs. Alvarez.
He answered immediately.
“Nathan?”
Her voice was shaking.
“I’m here.”
“I can see the upstairs light. Lily is at the window.”
Nathan looked toward the dark road ahead.
“Thank you. Stay where you are.”
“I will.”
The call ended.
Nathan slipped the phone into his pocket.
Marcus glanced at him.
“You good?”
Nathan took one breath.
“No. But I’m focused.”
That was the only answer he gave.
When the SUV turned onto Nathan’s street, the house came into view.
The driveway was still wet.
The red plastic bucket was lying on its side near the edge of the concrete. A thin trail of water ran toward the street. One of Lily’s small sneakers was beside the front step.
Nathan saw it through the windshield.
He reached for the door before the SUV had fully stopped.
Marcus caught his arm.
“Let the process work.”
Nathan looked at him.
“I’m not going in blind.”
“Exactly.”
Nathan nodded once and stepped out.
The front door opened before he reached it.
Claire stood there.
Her phone was still in her hand.
She looked exhausted rather than frightened. Her hair was pulled back loosely, and she wore the same clothes she had been wearing in the recording. Meredith stood behind her.
For a second, nobody spoke.
Then Claire said, “Nathan, this is not what you think.”
Nathan did not answer that.
“Where’s Lily?”
Claire glanced toward the hallway.
“She’s upstairs. She’s upset.”
“Bring her to me.”
Meredith stepped forward.
“You’re not going to storm in here and make this worse.”
Nathan’s eyes moved to her.
“Move aside.”
Meredith folded her arms.
“You don’t get to come home after flying halfway across the country and act like you’re the only adult in the room.”
Nathan looked past her.
“Lily. Now.”
Claire lowered her phone.
“She’s calming down.”
“Then she can calm down with her father.”
Meredith shook her head.
“You have no idea what she did.”
Nathan’s expression did not change.
“I watched the footage.”
That ended the argument for a moment.
Claire’s face tightened.
Nathan continued.
“I watched my daughter standing barefoot outside while four adults laughed. I watched you record her. I watched your mother block the door. I watched Brooke dump water beside her feet.”
He pointed toward the phone in Claire’s hand.
“And now I know you recorded more than that.”
Claire went still.
Meredith turned toward her daughter.
“What did he see?”
Claire did not answer.
Nathan did not press her for an explanation.
He heard movement upstairs.
A small voice called his name.
“Daddy?”
Nathan’s shoulders dropped for the first time since the flight.
“I’m here.”
Lily appeared at the top of the stairs.
Her hair was still damp around her face. She had changed out of the unicorn pajamas and into a sweatshirt that was too large for her. She held the banister with one hand.
Nathan looked at her.
“Come here.”
Lily started down the stairs.
Claire stepped aside.
Meredith did not.
Nathan’s voice became quiet.
“Let her pass.”
Meredith stared at him.
Then she moved.
Lily ran the last few steps.
Nathan dropped to one knee and caught her before she reached him. She buried her face against his shoulder.
He held her tightly.
He did not ask her to explain.
He did not ask what she had done.
He simply stayed there until her breathing slowed.
Marcus remained near the doorway, saying nothing.
After a few seconds, Lily whispered, “I didn’t mean to make everybody mad.”
Nathan closed his eyes.
“You didn’t.”
She pulled back enough to look at him.
“Grandma said I was being disrespectful.”
Nathan glanced toward Meredith.
“What happened before you went outside?”
Lily hesitated.
“They wanted me to apologize.”
“For what?”
She looked down.
“I said I wanted to wait for you before they opened the package.”
Nathan’s attention shifted.
“What package?”
Lily pointed toward the living room.
On the coffee table sat a small cardboard shipping box.
Nathan looked at Marcus.
Marcus immediately moved toward it, but Nathan stopped him.
“Don’t touch it.”
Nathan approached the table himself.
The box had already been opened.
Inside was a child’s medical item Lily had been expecting for a school-related need. Nathan recognized it because he had ordered it himself.
