That evening, I found an old photograph of the Eiffel Tower from a previous business trip and sent it to him.
“Just landed in Paris. Heading to the hotel now.”
His reply came almost immediately.
“Enjoy every second, sweetheart. By Tuesday, everything is going to be different.”
I read his message twice before setting my phone down. Eric believed I was thousands of miles away while he dismantled my finances, but in reality I was less than fifty yards from our house with an attorney helping me build a case from his own recorded words.
He had no idea that his attempted loan had already been flagged, his secret transactions were being traced, and Chloe’s name had connected the missing money to something far more personal than Richard’s business problems. By the time Eric discovered I had never gone to Paris, I intended to make sure every person involved understood exactly what they had helped him do.
Eric had been right about one thing when he promised that everything would be different by Tuesday. What he did not understand was that the change was coming for him, not for me.
Part 3: I Walked Into the Celebration They Built on My Money
By Monday morning, Richard was preparing to announce what he believed would save Nebula Systems. He had organized an investor showcase at a luxury hotel in Midtown Manhattan, where he planned to unveil a $1.25 million credit line secured by the fraudulent guarantee against my home.
At 8:40, I entered through a side entrance with Eva beside me. I wore a charcoal suit, carried a slim leather portfolio, and felt none of the panic I had experienced on the bathroom floor two days earlier.
Near the stage, Richard was smiling for investors while Sarah recorded him on her phone. Eleanor held champagne and circulated through the room with the confidence of someone who believed the family had already won, while Eric stood close to the podium looking perfectly comfortable.
For ten years, I had loved that man. I had shared quiet dinners, renovations, ordinary weekends, and plans for the future with him, but now I could only see the husband who had raised a glass while discussing how to strip me of my home and savings.
Richard stepped up to the microphone.
“Today, Nebula Systems is demonstrating the strategic backing necessary to take our platform to the next level.”
A funding figure of $1.25 million appeared on the large screen behind him. Richard continued describing expansion plans before clicking his remote to display a transfer confirmation.
Instead, the screen turned red.
TRANSACTION REJECTED: COMPLIANCE & FRAUD HOLD.
Richard clicked again, then tried to laugh off the message as a technical problem.
“It’s not a glitch, Richard.”
My voice carried from the back of the ballroom, and Eric turned toward me so quickly that the color seemed to drain from his face. Sarah lowered her phone, while Eleanor stared as if I had stepped out of another country.
“Clara? Aren’t you supposed to be in Paris?”
“You certainly hoped I was.”
Richard demanded that I leave his private corporate event. I walked farther down the aisle and asked him to explain to his investors why his company had attempted to secure $1.25 million using a forged guarantee against a home that belonged solely to me.
One of the investors immediately asked what guarantee I was referring to. Eva handed the relevant files to the A/V technician, and the screen displayed the draft loan agreement, the title to my house, and a signature that was supposed to be mine.
Sarah protested that none of it proved intent.
“You’re right. That’s why I brought the audio.”
The ballroom fell silent as the recording from my house began playing through the speakers. Eleanor’s voice came first, followed by the broker openly discussing the forged signature, and then Richard celebrating that the loan would save Nebula Systems.
Eric rushed toward me and grabbed my elbow.
“Clara, turn it off. We can fix this at home.”
“We already heard how you planned to fix it at home.”
Then his own recorded voice filled the room, explaining how he intended to freeze our accounts once I landed in Paris and file for divorce while accusing me of running away with money. The investors stopped looking at me and began looking at him.
The recording continued until Richard’s question about the missing $480,000 played aloud. One of Nebula’s principal backers, Thomas Sterling, immediately stood and demanded to know what Richard had done with that money.
Richard insisted it was a private family misunderstanding, but I opened my portfolio and produced the financial trail. The records connected my missing funds to Nebula’s payroll accounts, Sarah’s checking account, and a series of luxury purchases that could not be explained as business expenses.
Then I looked directly at Sarah.
“Was I family when you took money to cover Eric’s affair with Chloe Vance?”
Sarah froze.
So did Eric.
And for the first time, Eleanor looked at her own children as if she no longer recognized the people standing beside her.
Part 4: Their Alliance Fell Apart in Front of Everyone
The mention of Chloe changed the atmosphere in the ballroom immediately. Eleanor turned toward Eric in confusion, while Sarah suddenly looked much less certain than she had moments earlier.
“Who on earth is Chloe?”
I opened the second ledger and explained that more than $140,000 had been spent over fourteen months on luxury travel, jewelry, hotels, and other expenses connected to Chloe Vance. Several transfers into Sarah’s account also carried notes such as “for covering for me,” making it difficult for her to pretend she knew nothing about the affair.
“Those wires could mean anything!”
