Part 2 — The Secret Inside the Doll
I stood completely frozen behind the apartment door, my eye pressed firmly against the peephole.
For a few seconds, I couldn’t comprehend what I was seeing.
The person standing outside wasn’t Harrison.
It wasn’t the police.
It wasn’t some random stranger.
It was Victoria Sterling.
The woman whose face had been plastered across countless magazine covers.
The billionaire heiress who always smiled perfectly in the paparazzi photos.
The woman my ex-husband had chosen over us.
But the woman standing outside my door looked nothing like the polished socialite everyone knew.
Her hair was wildly disheveled.
Her expensive designer coat was rumpled.
And her eyes…
Her eyes were burning with pure rage.
“Sarah,” she called out softly through the heavy wood.
The forced sweetness in her voice made my stomach twist into knots.
“I know you’re awake in there.”
I didn’t move a single muscle.
I didn’t even breathe.
Chloe was crying quietly in her bedroom, and every maternal instinct inside me screamed to protect her.
How did she know?
How did she know about the doll?
How did she find out where we lived in Reseda?
Then Victoria spoke again.
“You have something that rightfully belongs to me.”
My fingers tightened around the USB drive hidden deep inside my robe pocket.
The doll.
She wasn’t here for Harrison.
She wasn’t here because she cared about him.
She was here because she knew something was hidden inside that old rag doll.
I stepped backward slowly.
Three years ago, I thought Harrison leaving us was the absolute worst thing he could ever do.
I thought the pain of watching him walk away was the deepest wound a person could carry.
I was dead wrong.
Because now the man who had abandoned his own daughter had sent her a desperate message from somewhere completely unknown.
And the woman who had stolen him from us was currently standing right outside my door.
“Mommy?”
Chloe’s tiny voice echoed from behind me.
I whipped around.
She was standing in the narrow hallway, clutching the rag doll tightly against her chest.
My heart practically stopped beating.
“Sweetheart,” I whispered, rushing over to her. “Go right back to your room.”
“But Daddy said—”
“Listen to Mommy.”
She looked up at me with wide, confused eyes.
The exact same eyes Harrison used to have.
For a split second, I hated myself for even thinking that.
I hated that my little girl still carried pieces of the man who had completely disappeared from our lives.
But then I remembered the disturbing video.
His terrified, gaunt face.
His broken, raspy voice.
Save me.
Don’t trust her.
I grabbed Chloe’s little hand and quickly pulled her into my bedroom.
“Sweetheart, I need you to be very, very brave right now.”
Her eyes widened further.
“Is Daddy in trouble?”
I swallowed the heavy lump in my throat.
“Yes.”
The word felt entirely foreign coming out of my mouth.
After three long years of harboring anger, after three years of convincing myself he simply didn’t care, I finally admitted the terrifying truth.
Something had happened to him.
Something horrific.
A loud, violent crash came from the front door.
Victoria had stopped politely knocking.
She was actively trying to break in.
I gently covered Chloe’s mouth as she started to sob.
“Where is it, Sarah?!” Victoria shouted.
Her voice had completely lost its calm facade.
“I know Harrison sent it to you!”
The blood ran cold in my veins.
She knew.
She knew absolutely everything.
I looked down at the doll in Chloe’s arms.
The ugly little thing that I had almost tossed straight into the dumpster.
The thing that was carrying Harrison’s final, desperate warning.
And then I noticed something.
The doll’s stomach was still partially ripped open from where Chloe had dug into it.
But there was something else wedged inside.
Something Chloe hadn’t managed to pull out.
I carefully took the doll from her grasp.
“Mommy?”
“I just need to check something, baby.”
I dropped to the floor and pulled the torn seam slightly wider.
Deep inside the doll’s cheap stuffing was a secondary hidden compartment.
My hands violently shook as I reached inside.
I pulled out a tiny, silver metal key.
And right beneath it…
A photograph.
I flipped it over.
My entire body turned to ice.
It was Harrison.
But he wasn’t standing alone.
Standing right beside him was an older man.
A man I instantly recognized from the national news networks.
Richard Sterling.
Victoria’s father.
The billionaire founder of Sterling Enterprises.
The man the entire world believed had tragically died two years ago.
But according to this photograph…
He was very much alive.
And he was standing inside some sort of sterile, underground medical facility.
On the back of the picture, Harrison had scribbled something in black ink.
“Sarah, if you found this, they haven’t found everything yet. The truth is much bigger than me. Victoria isn’t the mastermind. She’s just the puppet they put in front.”
I stared blankly at the words.
A cold, horrifying realization slowly began to form in my mind.
Harrison wasn’t just being held captive by his psychotic wife.
He had uncovered something massive.
Something so powerful that someone was willing to completely erase him from existence to keep it quiet.
Another massive crash echoed from the living room.
The deadbolt on the front door finally gave way.
I grabbed Chloe and sprinted toward the bedroom window.
We lived on the third floor of the complex.
There was no fire escape. No easy way down.
Suddenly, my cell phone vibrated in my pocket.
Unknown Caller.
For a brief second, I didn’t want to answer it.
But every instinct inside me screamed that I had to.
I jammed my finger onto the green button.
“Hello?”
A man’s voice whispered through the static.
“Sarah?”
I completely froze.
I knew that voice.
But it was impossible.
“Harrison?”
Total silence on the other end.
Then, a jagged, broken breath.
“Yes.”
My knees almost gave out beneath me.
“You’re actually alive?”
“I don’t have much time.”
I shot a panicked look toward the bedroom door.
Victoria’s heavy footsteps were advancing down the hallway.
“She knows about the doll,” I whispered frantically.<!–nextpage–>
“I know.”
“How could she possibly know?”
“Because I didn’t send it to Chloe.”
My heart skipped a beat.
“What?”
Harrison’s voice cracked with emotion.
“Sarah… I sent it to you.”
I stared down at the torn fabric in my hands.
“But the package had Chloe’s name written on it.”
“No,” he whispered.
“That was the trap.”
My blood turned to absolute ice.
“What are you saying?”
“I knew Victoria would intercept anything addressed directly to you. So I used Chloe’s name, because I knew for a fact you would never throw away a gift from me if you thought it was for our daughter.”
A massive wave of anger and deep betrayal washed over me.
Even now.
Even after everything he had done.
He had deliberately used our little girl.
“You put Chloe in direct danger.”
“I know.”
His voice completely broke.
“And I am so, so sorry. More than you will ever understand.”
The brass handle on my bedroom door began turning.
Victoria was trying to force her way inside.
Harrison continued speaking rapidly.
“Sarah, you have to listen to me. The silver key inside that doll opens a private safety deposit box.”
“Where is it?”
“At the First Los Angeles Trust downtown.”
I looked down at the small metal key burning a hole in my palm.
“What exactly is inside it?”
A long, agonizing pause.
Then Harrison whispered:
“The absolute proof that Victoria’s family built their entire empire on a horrific secret they buried twenty years ago.”
The bedroom door clicked and opened slightly.
I heard Victoria’s chilling voice.
“Sarah…”
She was in the room.
Harrison’s voice reached a pitch of sheer desperation.
“You need to get out of there right now.”
“But where are they keeping you?!”
Another pause.
Then he said something that made my heart completely stop.
“I’m not the only person she’s keeping down here.”
The line went dead.
I grabbed Chloe’s hand and pulled her behind me.
Victoria stepped fully into the light of the bedroom.
Her picture-perfect, camera-ready smile was completely gone.
She looked down at the torn doll on the floor.
Then she looked up at me.
“You really should have just thrown that piece of trash away.”
I backed up until my shoulders hit the glass of the window.
“Where is Harrison?”
For the very first time, a flicker of genuine fear flashed across Victoria’s face.
It was only for a split second.
But I definitely saw it.
“You don’t understand what you’ve stumbled into,” she hissed.
“No,” I said, gripping the silver key so tightly it cut into my skin.
“I think I finally do.”
Victoria took one menacing step closer.
“You have absolutely no idea who you are fighting.”
I looked down at Chloe cowering behind my legs.
Then I looked back at the woman who had mercilessly destroyed our entire family.
And in that moment, I realized something profound.
Three years ago, Harrison had abandoned us.
But tonight…
I was the absolute only person standing between Victoria Sterling and the devastating truth.
And that truth was securely hidden inside a small metal box, just waiting to be opened.
